Grief Counselling in Toronto

Losing someone or something that matters to you changes how you navigate your daily life. It can become difficult to concentrate, sleep well, or even find the energy for routine tasks. Life-shaping events—such as the death of a loved one or a divorce—create a significant, often unexpected shift in your world.

I’m Lylla Goheen, the Registered Psychotherapist behind NuEra Therapy, based in Etobicoke. I provide grief counselling in Toronto and across Ontario, both in person and online. Therapy is built on trust, which is why I operate a solo practice. When you book with me, we work one-on-one throughout your entire healing process. You will always have a dedicated, familiar professional in your corner who deeply understands where you started and where you are going.

What Grief Actually Looks Like

Grief rarely looks just like crying peacefully in a quiet room. It is messy, unpredictable, and often shows up in strange ways that can make you feel like you are losing your grip.

Through personalized grief counselling, we make sense of these reactions together. Grief doesn’t just affect your mood; it impacts your whole system. In addition to the standard signs like tearfulness and sorrow, you might experience:

Emotional

Along with a crushing sadness, you might flash with anger at a stranger in traffic, or experience a bizarre sense of complete emotional numbness. You may even feel moments of relief, followed immediately by intense guilt for feeling relieved.

Physical

In addition to standard fatigue or loss of appetite, grief is physically heavy. It can feel like walking through mud, random aches and pains, a hollow feeling in your chest, or suddenly dropping things because your nervous system is overwhelmed.

Cognitive (Grief Brain)

Beyond general distraction, there is a persistent mental fog. You might forget the names of everyday objects, lose your train of thought mid-sentence, or find it impossible to read an email. Simple tasks can suddenly feel like complex math.

Behavioural

While withdrawing from others is common, you might also experience the opposite: needing to talk endlessly about what happened, yet feeling like no one wants to listen to you anymore. Alternatively, you might hyper-fixate on a new project to stay distracted, or avoid the grocery store entirely because you can’t bear to walk past your loved one’s favourite food.

Signs Counselling Could Help

  • Persistent sadness, anger, or guilt
  • Shock or emotional numbness
  • Anxiety or loneliness
  • Disrupted sleep or changes in appetite
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Withdrawing from people you would normally rely on
  • Ongoing difficulty resuming basic routines, weeks after the loss occurred

If several of these signs persist for a prolonged period, professional support can be highly beneficial. My approach to grief counselling is evidence-based and collaborative, meaning we will work together to identify the best strategies for your specific needs. I draw on supportive counselling, mindfulness skills, and structured therapies (when appropriate) for complicated or traumatic grief.

The "Meta-Grief" (Grieving About Your Grief)

Often, the hardest part of loss isn’t just the sadness—it is the pressure we put on ourselves afterward. You might find yourself quietly panicking, asking: “Am I grieving wrong?” or “Shouldn’t I be over this by now?”

Many people also withdraw because they are terrified of burdening their friends. You might notice the people around you going back to their normal lives, leaving you feeling like you have to pretend you are fine so you don’t exhaust them. In therapy, you never have to pretend. There is no timeline, no “correct” way to grieve, and you are never a burden here.

How Grief and Loss Counselling Can Help

Grief counselling is not about “getting over” a loss; it is about learning to carry it without it governing your daily life. Counselling gives that process structure. In our sessions, we will focus on:

  • Naming and processing what you are feeling at a pace that respects where you are.
  • Understanding the underlying reasons grief is presenting the way it is for you.
  • Building practical coping strategies you can use in daily life.
  • Reducing the isolation that frequently accompanies loss.
  • Building emotional resilience over the course of treatment.
  • Creating space to honour what or who was lost.
  • Adjusting to the practical changes the loss has introduced.
  • Establishing a way forward that does not require forgetting.

My Approach to Loss and Grief Counselling

My approach is tailored to your unique experience, rather than applied as a fixed sequence. Depending on your situation, treatment may draw on the following:

Person-Centred Therapy

Used to let your own experience guide the direction of treatment.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

Used to address the thought patterns that can keep grief stuck in place.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)

Used to build a life alongside grief rather than waiting for it to resolve.

Internal Family Systems (IFS)

Used to address the conflicting emotions loss often produces.

Compassion-Focused Therapy

Used when guilt or self-blame is present alongside the loss.

Emotion-Focused Therapy (EFT)

Used to process emotions that have gone unexpressed or unacknowledged.

Mindfulness-Based Approaches

Used to build awareness and steadiness in the present moment.

Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT)

Used to identify practical next steps when daily functioning is affected.

Trauma-Informed Care

Used when the loss was sudden or traumatic.

Narrative Therapy

Used to honor the full story of your relationship and reframe painful narratives around the loss.

Polyvagal-Informed Care

Used to soothe a dysregulated nervous system and restore a sense of physical safety after loss.

Meaning Reconstruction & Continuing Bonds

Used to make sense of life after loss while building a healthy, lifelong connection to your loved one.

Types of Loss I Work With

Oftentimes, my clients state that they feel completely alone in their grief. It can feel like people simply do not understand, leaving you unable to share in or participate in the joys of everyday life as it continues on around you. You might hear well-meaning but hurtful things from others, like, “Shouldn’t you be over it by now?” or “Why can’t you just be happy for me with my new news?”

It is incredibly hard to be present when a part of you is still pulled back into the past. Whatever type of loss you are carrying, this space is for you to process it without judgment.

Every loss listed here, and any that are not, is valid. If it matters to you, it is worth bringing into our sessions.

  • Loss of a spouse or partner: Navigating a shattered vision of the future alongside sudden, overwhelming shifts in your daily routine and identity.
  • Loss of a parent: Untangling a lifelong bond, which is frequently complicated by shifting family dynamics or conversations left unresolved.
  • Loss of a child: A profound, unthinkable heartbreak. Support is paced entirely around what you are ready for, moment by moment.
  • Loss of a sibling: Grieving someone who shared your history and was supposed to be there for your entire future.
  • Loss of a friend: Processing the loss of a chosen family member, confidant, and witness to your life.
  • Miscarriage or pregnancy loss: Grieving the deep loss of a hope, a bond, and a future you had already begun to build.
  • Pet loss: Honouring the heartbreak of losing a deeply loved daily companion and a source of unconditional comfort.
  • Divorce or relationship breakdown: Navigating the painful untangling of a shared life and rebuilding your identity after a partnership ends.
  • Career or financial loss: Coping with the sudden loss of stability, purpose, and the identity tied to your life's work.
  • Chronic illness: Grieving the loss of your former physical abilities and adjusting to a new reality, where the grief runs alongside an ongoing medical journey.
  • Caregiver grief: Processing the emotional exhaustion and complex feelings that build over prolonged, demanding caregiving responsibilities.
  • Anticipatory grief: Carrying the heavy emotional weight of preparing for a loss that has not yet happened, but is approaching.
